Throwing Courses:
Troy Town offers some of the highest quality throwing and glazing courses available in London. Due to the intimate size of our classes, results from even complete beginners are excellent over the course of just four sessions.
Works from our throwing classes are all produced in our in-house clay mixes, and are glazed and reduction-fired by TT staff. There are very few throwing courses in existence which offer students access to the exquisite effects of reduction-fired pottery.
Courses are designed for complete beginners, though advanced courses are also available. In four weekly evening sessions you will learn the basics of working with clay on the wheel. Ensuring the greatest level of tuition and focus, these courses are for a maximum of two people at a time and are ideal for couples or friends.
For our beginners and advanced throwing classes, please use the form below to sign up. If you are interested in learning to glaze, mix glazes, fire our reduction kiln, or anything else, please email classes@troytown.org.uk to discuss options.
NB all of our courses are for adults only (18+). We hope to develop more courses for young people in the future.
Sunday School:
Along with our throwing lessons we offer a more casual season of group classes focussing on Japanese hand-building techniques. These happen on Sundays at Troy Town and are split into two sessions. These classes are only for adults (+18), though we hope to provide workshops for younger people in the future.
In the morning session (11-1pm) you can learn how to make kogo. These small lidded boxed are carefully carve out of a solid lump of fine clay, and are traditionally used to hold incense. They also work very well as trinket or ring boxes.
In the afternoon session, you can learn how to make koro & kenzan. Koro are lidded boxed for burning incense cones in, while kenzan are holed forms for arranging dried flowers and ikebana.
Feel free to sign up for any number of these classes, or just one. These workshops are for small groups of maximum 10 at a time, with a focused teaching style and space for individual design.
Your works will be fired and glazed by Troy Town staff and reduction-fired in our gas kiln. Each student will end up with 1 finished piece which will be available for collection roughly 1 month after the workshop, as drying and firing with our processes takes time. This is a very rare opportunity to learn these ancient processes from professionals, and to have a work fired in our reduction kiln.
Troy Town is located at 156 Hoxton Street, N16SH. 5 Minutes walk from Hoxton overground station and 15 minutes from Old Street.
Accessibility:
A note about accessibility - Unfortunately Troy Town is not yet as accessible as we would like it to be, and as we intend it to be in the near future. We are step free from the road, in a ground floor location, with just a small single step into the pottery which can be ramped by staff. We do not have an accessible toilet provision, though nearby Hoxton Hall does have an accessible toilet. In terms of making, we generally work at 90cm high workbenches, however, we have a much lower table (63cm height) which can be set up on request. If you have booked a class, or have thought about booking a class and would like to know more any accessibility concerns, etc, please email us at classes@troytown.org.uk
As part of our future plans, we are prioritising accessibility and we are sorry that we are not there yet.
Refund policy for classes:
We are a not for profit, and as teaching forms an important part of our income, we do not offer refunds on classes booked at Troy Town. We are however happy to reschedule classes up to two times to any preferred future date. This applies to Sunday School classes and throwing lessons.
